June 6, 2022 – More than 200 South Florida students headed into summer with a big ROAR – and an afternoon filled with surprises. Together at a local movie theatre with mentors and a few very special guests, the students enjoyed an exclusive early screening of the highly anticipated Universal Pictures film, Jurassic World: Dominion, set to release in theatres nationwide on June 10.
The students are from the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami and Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade, which are both long-time community partners of Comcast and where it has established Lift Zones. Lift Zones are WiFi connected spaces at community centers where students and families can get online for free to participate in virtual classes, complete schoolwork, and more.
But the excitement wasn’t over once the movie credits rolled. In a special presentation hosted by Telemundo’s Jorge Bernal, two of the film’s stars – Mamoudou Athie, who portrays Ramsay Cole, and DeWanda Wise, who portrays Kayla Watts, – paid a surprise visit and announced every student would receive a new laptop, courtesy of Comcast NBCUniversal.
“Keeping everyone connected is one of our main priorities, and we are so happy we were able to make this event happen,” said Marta Casas-Celaya, Director of External Affairs for Comcast in Miami. “Seeing so many kids excited to watch the film and get a brand-new laptop was priceless, and something that motivates to continue to do the work we do.”
The laptops will enable students to participate in Comcast NBCUniversal’s forthcoming “Jurassic World Rule Your Future STEAM Initiative,” which addresses the lack of STEAM preparation and digital skills among low-income and first generation-to-college students.
Additionally, Comcast is providing 1,000 Lift Zones across the country, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami and Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade, with curated “Jurassic World Rule Your Future STEAM Initiative” activity kits. Each kit contains a variety of branded items and school supplies, including an Activity Book designed expressly for Lift Zone partners. The comprehensive initiative is designed to inspire today’s students to become the next generation of STEAM professionals.
These programs and events are made possible through Project UP, Comcast NBCUniversal’s comprehensive initiative to advance digital equity and help build a future of unlimited possibilities.
