Hurricane Ian Response and Restoration Update for Southwest Florida

For estimated restoration timeline, please visit Southwest Florida Network Restoration Timeline.

Update November 15, 2022 at 3:30 pm

As Comcast continues restoration efforts following Hurricane Ian, services are back up for more customers throughout the Eastern, Northeastern and Central parts of Sanibel Island.

Restoration crews are deployed all over the Island, continuing to work on the network that was so heavily damaged by Hurricane Ian that it must be entirely rebuilt to fully restore Xfinity services to homes and businesses on Sanibel Island.

The entire network rebuild will be completed ahead of schedule and most of the Island will have customers restored by November 22, weeks ahead of the original date of December 16.

Comcast can also now provide a more detailed restoration timeline for specific locations and areas on Sanibel Island. In areas that are listed as predominantly restored, our network is operational, and services have been restored for approximately 90 percent of customers.

Our restoration timelines are based on a number of factors, including the remaining work Comcast crews need to complete in a neighborhood or on a specific street, the ability of our crews to gain access to those locations, and whether debris will prevent crews from performing the construction and connection work needed to restore connectivity to homes there. Along the coastline, some of the work needed to complete our network may be impacted by access issues or additional damage that our crews must work around.

Sanibel Island Updated Restoration Timelines

Northeast Sanibel: Woodrings Point to Periwinkle Way; and Causeway Boulevard to Gumbo Limbo/Peaceful Drive

  • Some customers are already restored
  • Services will be predominantly restored November 19

Central Sanibel:  Lindgren Boulevard to Sanibel Recreation Center and Seagate

  • Some customers are already restored
  • Services will be predominantly restored November 20
  • Full restoration of services along the southern coastline in this area will be completed by December 5

West Sanibel:  Blind Pass Beach and The Castaways to Sanibel Recreation Center and Gulf Pines

  • Services will be predominantly restored November 20
  • Full restoration of services near Castaway Beach will be completed December 4

East Sanibel – Point Ybel and the Sanibel City Pier to Causeway Boulevard

  • Some customers are already restored
  • Services will be predominantly restored November 22
  • Full restoration of services along East Gulf Drive will be completed December 5

Xfinity WiFi Van: A Xfinity WiFi van is currently stationed at Sanibel (Periwinkle Way – east of Tarpon Bay Blvd. and across from Billy’s Bike Shop/Alecks Alley).

Update November 9, 2022 at 3:15pm

Our response teams have made significant progress in restoring connectivity to our network throughout Ft. Myers Beach. Hurricane Ian’s massive storm surge and 150 mph winds severely damaged our network infrastructure, including our lines and equipment, which in many instances, were beyond repair. The entire network in this area is in the process of being rebuilt in order to restore Xfinity services to homes and businesses.

Comcast is now able to provide a more detailed restoration timeline for specific areas in Ft. Myers Beach. Our crews have been working neighborhood-by-neighborhood, and wherever possible we are going home-by-home to get customers reconnected to their Xfinity services. For an area to be listed as predominantly restored, it means that our network is operational and approximately 90 percent of customers have services restored.

The timelines below for Ft. Myers Beach are based on a few factors including the remaining work Comcast crews need to complete in a neighborhood or on a specific street, the ability for our crews to gain access to that location, and whether debris will prevent crews from performing the construction and connection work needed to restore connectivity to homes at that location. Hurricane Ian was a Category 4 hurricane that left Southwest Florida with much devastation and destruction, and we are here to get your services connected and we will not stop until the work is done.

Ft. Myers Beach Updated Restoration Timelines

West Ft. Myers Beach — Times Square to Bowditch Point

  • On schedule for services to be predominantly restored on or before original date listed – Nov. 15

Central Ft. Myers Beach: Times Square to the Red Coconut RV Park

  • On schedule for services to be predominantly restored on or before original date listed – Nov. 15

Black Island

  • On schedule for services to be predominantly restored on or before original date listed – Nov. 15

East Ft. Myers Beach: South of Red Coconut RV Park to Lover’s Key

As a result of the inability to access certain roads and neighborhoods due to Ian-related damage, including the amount of debris impeding construction work on our network – we have updated the timeline for restoring services to these portions of East Ft. Myers Beach.

  • Estero Boulevard to Bay Beach Lane services will be predominantly restored November 23
  • Bay Beach Lane to Dolphin Pointe services will be predominantly restored November 23
  • Madera Road to Carlos Point services will be predominantly restored December 8

Customers can check for the latest information on outages in your area by visiting the Status Center or checking on the Xfinity app.

As our response crews are nearing full restoration of services for our customers in much of Southwest Florida, we are also making significant progress in restoring fiber connectivity to Pine Island, Sanibel and Captiva.  As of today, we continue to be on track for the previously announced Nov. and Dec. 2022 dates for restoration of services for those barrier island and coastal communities.

 To date our teams have:

  • Replaced more than 26,000 drop lines
  • Replaced nearly 7,000 spans equaling more than 400 miles of our network
  • Restored power and made repairs to 26 hub sites, part of the critical infrastructure that provides connectivity to our network

The response team’s commitment to restoring connectivity was a massive undertaking with more than 1,700 members working around the clock to return services to our customers. Currently, we have now fully restored our network in four counties while continuing to make substantial progress in the following impacted areas:

  • Charlotte County: More than 96 percent of our customers have services restored.
  • Collier County: More than 99 percent of our customers have services restored.
  • Lee County: With the exception of Captiva, Ft. Myers Beach, Pine Island and Sanibel, we have 98 percent of our customers with services restored.
  • Sarasota County: More than 98 percent of our customers have services restored.

For customers in impacted areas that are still experiencing service interruption, it is highly likely that the equipment or the connection inside your home may be damaged. Please chat with Xfinity assistant online or call 1-800-XFINITY (1-800-934-6489) so we can assist.

October 24, 2022 at 8:00pm

Our response team of more than 1,700 technicians, network maintenance and engineering specialists have made steady progress repairing the damages to our equipment and infrastructure from Hurricane Ian and restoring connectivity to impacted customers as quickly as possible.

Immediately after the storm, and as soon as it was safe for our crews to do so, our response team physically assessed the damage to our network and worked to establish timelines for restoring connectivity. For areas that required repair, we were able to predominantly restore services on or ahead of the scheduled date. Now all of those areas are predominantly restored, which means 90 percent or greater of our customers have services restored. It is important to note that our teams are actively working on small pocket outages that may impact an individual home, street or neighborhood in these areas still.

For the remaining areas listed below – Captiva, Fort Myers Beach, Pine Island and Sanibel – our crews are working around the clock to rebuild our network which received substantial damage from the Hurricane. Currently, we are making significant progress and we are within our connectivity rebuild and restore dates listed in Nov. or Dec. 2022.

We appreciate your patience and thank you for your understanding as we navigate the many challenges during network restoration. Comcast has been a partner in Southwest Florida for more than 20 years, and rest assured we are here for the long-haul. Our work will not stop until every customer impacted by the Hurricane has their services restored.

Restoration timelines are based on the assessments of damage to our network and the condition of our local plant in the impacted areas where we are currently working to make repairs.

October 18, 2022 – 2:40pm

As our network teams continue working on restoring services in the Hurricane impacted areas throughout Southwest Florida, we have been able to now identify 25 service areas that are predominantly restored, which means that our network in these locations is operational and approximately 90 percent of customers have services restored. It is important to note that in these areas, our teams are still working on pocket outages that might impact an individual home or a neighborhood street.

For customers in the predominantly restored areas who are still without service, here is what we are doing:

  • Our crews are restoring the drop lines that connect these homes to our network. To date, teams have replaced more than 14,000 drops.
  • Our network maintenance teams are repairing damaged nodes located in individual neighborhoods.
  • In places like Cape Haze, Ft Myers and Cape Coral, there are still parts of our network that must operate on generator due to not having commercial power.  This can cause service interruptions for already restored customers.
  • Our tech ops teams are handling issues that are in customer homes, replacing damaged equipment like modems and checking all the connections that may have been damaged from the storm.

While many areas are now predominantly restored – we do not yet have 100 percent of customers back up and running.  We know there are still customers without service, and we are monitoring the network 24/7 to see if devices are not online.  Our crews are working in these areas to restore the remaining customers as quickly as possible. We apologize and want you to know that we are committed to getting you connected.

For customers in an area listed as predominately restored, but your Xfinity services are still not working after restarting your modem – we have a few options to reach a representative to troubleshoot or schedule a visit:

Sarasota, Manatee, Venice Fiber Cut Update:

Late yesterday afternoon, there was a significant fiber cut to one of our new fiber lines that was restoring service to many areas in Sebring, Manatee, Sarasota, Venice and Port Charlotte. The recovery phase can be challenging for our crews, as our new replacement lines are being inadvertently cut by power company crews and debris removal trucks.

By 5:50pm, repairs had been completed and service had begun to come online.

Charlotte County Update:

Much of Charlotte County suffered significant damage and devastation, especially along the harbor and the beach areas.  As soon as it was safe to do so, crews were deployed to assess the status of our network, and if at all possible – our teams started to work on repairing lines.

Even under the most difficult circumstances on the ground, our network maintenance and construction teams have been making steady progress in places like Punta Gorda and in Port Charlotte, repairing and replacing down drops in the area. These are the lines connecting homes and entire neighborhoods to our network.  Due to the hurricane force winds, our network did sustain significant damage which we have been working relentlessly to repair.  While power is restored to some of the area, our crews still must replace or repair lines that were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Ian.  To make matters more complicated, along the beaches and the harbor, there are no poles left to attach our lines to.  This infrastructure must be repaired first by the power company before our crews can rehang lines.

Also, one of the more challenging aspects we are facing in this stage of the restoration happens when we have laid new fiber lines to help restore connectivity and we have seen power company crews inadvertently cut these lines while working in the area.  Regardless of the challenges, we have nearly 1,200 crew members on the ground doing the restoration work to help get Xfinity services restored.  Comcast has been a partner to this community for more than 20 years and we are here for the long-haul. Our work will not stop until every customer in the area has their services restored.

We have identified the need for everyone, Xfinity customers and non-customers, to stay connected. We have stationed a WiFi van in Port Charlotte to provide free WiFi to anyone who needs it.  The Xfinity WiFi van can handle up to approximately 1,000 people getting connected at one time over a 300 sq foot area.  The WiFi van is located at the Walmart Neighborhood Market located at 2150 Tamiami Trail in Port Charlotte.

For our customers in those areas, we hear you and understand your frustration. As we receive updates from our teams on the ground, we will continue to update you on our recovery efforts.

Sarasota Update:

As of today, Comcast has repaired or replaced nearly 200 down drops in the Sarasota area since Hurricane Ian hit.  These are the lines connecting homes and entire neighborhoods to our network.  Due to the hurricane force winds, our network did sustain significant damage in this area which we have been working relentlessly to repair.

While power is restored to much of the area, our crews still must replace or repair lines that were damaged or destroyed by the Hurricane.  In some areas in Sarasota, there are damaged or downed poles which must be repaired first by the power company before our crews can rehang lines.  We now have nearly 1,200 crews on the ground doing the restoration work to help get Xfinity services restored.

Our hearts go out to everyone in Central and Southwest Florida impacted by the devastating effects of Hurricane Ian.

As we anticipated, the powerful storm caused widespread commercial power outages, leaving an estimated 800,000 Floridians still without electricity today. As soon as it was safely possible, our local crews began going out into the field the day after the storm passed to start repairing damaged fiber lines and setting up generators to power the critical infrastructure and equipment necessary to run our network.

We have also begun deploying additional response teams, including technicians, and network maintenance and engineering specialists from across 12 states, to join our Florida team and help with restoration efforts in the state’s most impacted areas.

With more than 1,200 employees of our own in Central and Southwest Florida, we are hearing first-hand stories about Hurricane Ian’s destruction and aftermath. We are currently assisting our team members with housing assistance, food, and water. We stand #FloridaStrong with you, as employees, as neighbors and as your provider.
