Allies, Friends and Volunteers Light Up the Streets at South Florida’s Stonewall Pride

Every June, people recognize Pride Month. 🏳️‍🌈 It’s a chance to celebrate the tremendous progress made by the LGBTQ+ community in their fight for equal rights, their ongoing contributions and rich history in our society. It’s also an opportunity to reflect on the advocacy still needed and the vital work which remains.

The spirit of Pride was on full display at Stonewall Pride Parade and Street Festival in Wilton Manors, Florida. Volunteers from Comcast’s Team UP shined bright among the tens of thousands of people in attendance. Candace Holmes, a Service Recovery Specialist, joined more than 20 other volunteers to help support the event. They brought the energy and handed out swag throughout the day. Holmes knows firsthand why support matters, saying her sibling’s journey for self-love compelled her to get more involved with the LGBTQ+ community.

“Growing up I remember a lot of whispering about my oldest brother, and it was not until I was a teenager that I understood what was going on,” said Holmes. “My brother was a drag performer and I watched him go through different phases of acceptance and internal struggle.  That is why now I am not just an ally; I am a true sister that will always be there for him and his community.”

Comcast NBCUniversal is dedicated to celebrating Pride and the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community year-round. In fact, the tech leader launched the OUT Employee Resource Group back in 1986, becoming one of the nation’s first LGBTQ+ focused ERGs. From professional development summits to wellness sessions to Pride parades like the one in Wilton Manors, Comcast’s commitment to welcoming all is stronger than ever.

Niecey Smith, a Comcast Customer Experience Coordinator, also volunteered for Stonewall Pride. She applauded her employer for putting its beliefs into action, saying it was a very special day.

“It felt amazing to connect with our diverse mix of employees, families and friends,” said Smith.

The Team UP volunteers arrived early to ensure Comcast’s presence could be seen by all. They set up an Xfinity booth to easily interact with the crowd. Experts also fielded questions about the company’s award-winning products and services.

The most anticipated moment arrived around sunset when thousands gathered for the Glow Night Parade. Comcast volunteers including NBCUniversal and Telemundo employees showed out in full force, colorful as ever. They alongside a beautiful float traveled down Wilton Drive and wished “Happy Pride” to those lined up on the streets.

Michael Fee, a CCF Integrity Operations Specialist, happily walked in the parade representing Comcast. He said this year was the third time he volunteered for Stonewall Pride.

“I am honored every time I do it because I am proud to work for a company that embraces and encourages me to be my authentic self,” said Fee. “Comcast exemplifies diversity, equality and inclusion at its fullest.”
