Comcast celebrates its rural Florida expansion with a tribute to local veterans and digital literacy donations

Anticipation, excitement, and community spirit filled the room at Indian River State College Dixon Hendry Campus as local leaders, nonprofit partners, and residents gathered for Comcast’s network activation celebration.

The event, held Wednesday, December 3, featured meaningful moments and special surprises to mark a major milestone. Comcast recently completed construction on its new network, expanding ultra-fast, reliable Internet to more than 2,600 homes and businesses across Okeechobee County.

For many families and entrepreneurs, this is the first time they’ve had access to a broadband connection – opening doors to education, healthcare, and economic opportunity.

Honoring Old Glory with Okeechobee Veterans

One of the event’s most memorable moments came when Tammie Dunlop-Lyon, Comcast Florida’s Director of Human Resources and a proud veteran, led a heartfelt flag presentation. Dunlop-Lyon invited District 11’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Commander Kevin Stripling and Auxiliary President Viki Stripling to the stage to receive a donation of 25 new American flags, which will replace worn flags across Okeechobee County. This gesture symbolizes respect and gratitude for those who served.

Boosting Digital Literacy and Workforce Development in Okeechobee

Following this powerful tribute, Comcast had two additional community contributions in store. The technology leader announced a donation of 25 laptops to the Education Foundation of Okeechobee. This organization connects the community to classrooms, providing resources and opportunities that help students thrive and educators succeed through grants and private donations. Executive Director Alaina Barron accepted the tech devices on behalf of the foundation, which will help bridge the digital divide for local students – a key focus of Comcast’ community impact efforts.

Before making the network activation official, Comcast had one final surprise. Scott Bugda from CareerSource Heartland was asked to join Jackie Guerry Maybeck, Comcast Florida’s VP of Sales & Marketing, on stage as Guerry Maybeck announced a $5,000 contribution to support digital skills training for job seekers in Okeechobee County. CareerSource Heartland’s mission is to connect individuals with employment opportunities and deliver workforce development programs that empower communities.

What Comcast’s Network Innovation Means for Homes and Businesses

With the ribbon officially cut, Okeechobee County is now connected to Comcast’s advanced network, bringing faster speeds, greater reliability, and new opportunities for homes and businesses in the area. This milestone reflects Comcast’s commitment to investing in technology and supporting the communities it serves.
