Comcast today announced a $25,000 donation to Second Harvest of the Big Bend to aid in the region’s Hurricane Idalia recovery efforts. The donation will go towards purchasing and distributing food and water for people in communities impacted by the storm, including Lafayette, Suwannee, Columbia, Hamilton, Madison, Taylor, Jefferson, Leon, and Wakulla counties.
“Comcast’s donation to Second Harvest will help expand the organization’s valuable resources, providing essential assistance to an even larger number of people in need, and support the Big Bend community during this challenging time,” said Jeff Buzzelli, Regional Senior Vice President for Comcast’s Florida Region.
Second Harvest is a nonprofit food bank that collects and distributes food to more than 149 hunger-relief charities throughout 16 counties in Florida’s Big Bend region. The organization is one of three Feeding America-affiliated food banks in Florida designated for disaster relief and response.
“Hurricane Idalia severely impacted seven out of the 16 counties that Second Harvest of the Big Bend serves. These communities were already some of our most rural and food insecure, and the effects of the hurricane are only going to exacerbate the hardships that our neighbors are facing,” said Monique Ellsworth, CEO of Second Harvest of the Big Bend. “With Comcast’s generous donation, we will be able to serve the communities through the disaster by providing the necessary food and water resources they need immediately after the storm, and for months after as we help them recover.”
Comcast donated an additional $225,000 to Volunteer Florida’s Florida Disaster Relief Fund to aid in Hurricane Idalia recovery efforts.
To help residents in the heavily impacted areas stay connected during restoration efforts, all of the public Xfinity WiFi hotspots remain open and available for anyone to use, including non-Xfinity customers, for free.
