The Magic City is home to a remarkable number of diverse voices. It’s that rich multiculturalism that makes Miami so special. Telling South Florida’s unique stories require expertise, passion and talent. Those traits were on full display during a recent event hosted by Florida’s technology leader.
Comcast invited content creators, influencers and journalists for an exciting get together, celebrating them as “Champions of Change” and recognizing their ongoing contributions to their community. The gathering focused on Black, Latino and LGBTQ+ media members who work every day to make sure people’s stories are heard.
The event, first of its kind from Comcast Florida, brought together more than 25 prominent local editors, radio hosts, reporters and social media personalities. Some of the media outlets at the luncheon included El Nuevo Herald, NBC, Telemundo, TÚ 94.9, Negocios Magazine, M.I.A. Media Group, Norsan Media and the South Florida Business Journal.
Gina Ulmos, one of the guests, is a radio personality for TÚ 94.9, one of Miami’s most popular radio stations for Latinos. She applauded Comcast’s initiative to organize an event like Champions of Change.
“It is so important that we do this, and I am excited to be part of this conversation,” said Ulmos. “Interactions like this allows us to know the impact that big companies like Comcast have at a hyper local level.”
The afternoon celebration brought together Comcast leaders from across the company including Sophia Marshall, Senior Vice President of Division Communications and Jeff Buzzelli, Senior Vice President for Comcast Cable’s Florida Region. Senior leaders from Comcast’s business services, government affairs, human resources, market development and tech operations joined in the conversation.
Marshall kicked off Champions of Change by thanking guests for the opportunity to re-introduce Comcast and learn about the different ways the tech leader creates economic opportunity, powers connectivity and touches people’s lives across the Sunshine State.
“We recognize that sometimes as you watch NBC or Telemundo, go to Universal Studios or stream your favorite shows on Peacock, you do not immediately associate that those are all in the same family as Comcast,” said Marshall. “I hope that after today, you have a better understanding of how we connect and contribute to the communities that we serve.”
Comcast’s community investments like Project Up, innovative products like NOW TV Latino and volunteer outreach like Team UP came up in the conversation. Other topics of interest included the age of misinformation, the excitement of the Paris games and the use of artificial intelligence.
Gabriela Ruiz, a Sr. Media Consultant for Norsan Media, said she loved Champions of Change and expressed how refreshing it was to learn about Comcast’s far-reaching products and services.
“I found it very interesting that Comcast does so much more than what the average person probably knows about,” said Ruiz. “As a person in media, it is my responsibility to have and vet information so that I can properly inform our audiences. This session held great value for me. It allowed me to connect a lot of dots.”
