Kid-Run Economy Thrives With Support From Comcast Volunteers at JA Biztown in Broward County

A recent field trip to Junior Achievement of South Florida took a surprise turn for elementary schooler Duwix B. The student quickly found himself named “CEO of Xfinity” for the day. Little did he know, the actual man in charge of all the Xfinity stores in the Sunshine State would be on hand to help him get the job done.

“Basically, I’m the CEO of Xfinity and I’m just doing my job signing papers and helping sell the stuff that we have,” said fifth grader Duwix. “In total we’ve made $32 today!”

Comcast Florida’s leadership team, including Regional Senior Vice President Jeff Buzzelli, visited JA Biztown to guide students in running their own simulated town for the day. In October, Comcast and Junior Achievement announced the opening of an Xfinity store in Biztown.

“We’re really excited to work with the fifth graders that are coming in today to learn about entrepreneurship and how to partner across many different functions,” said Stephanie Brown, Vice President of Finance at Comcast Florida. “We’re incredibly excited for them to work here in our Xfinity store!”

Comcast volunteers were spread across JA Biztown, from the news station to the sheriff’s office. Each station required students to work together toward a common goal, including selling products and services and successfully billing and paying other businesses. At the end of the day, the volunteers came out smiling, knowing they were able to make an impact on young lives and potentially inspire one of these students to one day work at Comcast.

“I’m so proud of the Comcast team and really appreciate the Junior Achievement team for their partnership,” said Jeff Buzzelli, Regional Senior Vice President, Comcast Florida. “I’m honored to serve on the board of JA and can’t wait to see more great work from this organization.”
