Florida’s Tech Leader Surprises 75 Jacksonville Students With Brand-New Laptops

An ordinary day at the MaliVai Washington Youth Foundation quickly transformed into an unforgettable moment for its young members. Comcast recently donated 75 brand-new computers to the nonprofit, so they could surprise students with the much-needed devices. The collaboration marks another milestone in a longstanding partnership between the Foundation and Florida’s technology leader, which spans more than 15 years. Comcast historically supports the organization through financial grants focused on expanding digital opportunity and skills training. They also provide support through sponsorships and volunteer projects.
Aaron, a high school freshman, is one of the laptop recipients. Aaron said having his own laptop will encourage him to do well in his classes.
“Being able to have a computer readily available will help me so much with my schoolwork,” said Aaron. “I am now able to complete at home whatever I don’t finish at school or at the Foundation. Thank you, Comcast!”

Through Project UP, Comcast is committed to expanding digital adoption and access across the country. Getting tech devices into the hands of those who need them can help expand educational opportunities. Some families might not have the most updated technology at home in under-served neighborhoods. These new computers will empower students, fostering academic success and reducing their reliance on mobile phones for homework.
MaliVai Washington joined in on the surprise distribution. Washington, a retired professional tennis player and former Olympian, founded the foundation in 1997 to provide youth development programs. He expressed his gratitude to Comcast, emphasizing these computers will have a significant impact on the students’ future.
“We’re incredibly grateful for Comcast’s continued support to our programs and students. This donation of 75 brand new laptops will not only help in our program but will allow our students to be successful at school,” said Washington. “While much work is done through computer-based software at their schools, high school students are not permitted to take their computers home. Many students, outside of our programs, end up completing homework on their phones. This contribution will help alleviate that for many of our students.”

The foundation’s center is located in the heart of Jacksonville, where it serves as a beacon of hope and opportunity for local youth. Its mission is to develop champions in classrooms, on tennis courts and throughout communities. The organization offers a wide range of programs that focus on academic assistance, college and career preparation, leadership training, life skills, mental health counseling, scholarships, tennis lessons and workforce development.
The MaliVai Washington Youth Foundation currently serves 500 low-income youth after-school and during the summer annually.
