A Tribute to the American Flag in Florida

Operation Old Glory is a unique initiative started by military veteran employees at Comcast to honor our nation’s symbol and people’s individual connections to the American flag in the communities we live in and serve. Through Operation Old Glory, our dedicated teammates work together to retire and replace worn or damaged flags outside homes and businesses, free of charge. Any home or business is eligible for the program, not just those that subscribe to our services.
Members of Comcast’s Veterans Network (VetNet) Employee Resource Group (ERG launched Operation Old Glory in 2017. VetNet connects active military, veterans, military family members, and military supporters within our company. VetNet, like all Comcast ERGs, is open to all employees. Operation Old Glory’s Flag Ambassadors volunteer to retire and replace flags within their local communities. This simple but meaningful act of service honors people’s personal connection to the flag.
Brian Kelly is a Flag Ambassador in Florida. Brian is an Installation & Service Supervisor who has been with Comcast for over 15 years and a member of VetNet for 10 years. We sat down with Brian to talk about Operation Old Glory in advance of Flag Day.

What is your military background?
While I have not served, I am a proud patriot and come from a military family. My mother served in the Army.
What makes Operation Old Glory special or different than other programs at Comcast or even in your community?
Operation Old Glory is truly about the red, white and blue which is such a meaningful symbol of our nation and of unity. There are a lot of great programs out there, but this is a pretty special one and really connects us with the community.
What does the American flag mean to you?
For me, the flag evokes a sense of patriotism and a remembrance of those who have served. It symbolizes hope and opportunity. When I see the flag flying, my heart fills with thankfulness and pride.

Can you tell us about a memorable Operation Old Glory flag replacement?
My first replacement was unforgettable. I saw a flag that needed replacing so I knocked on the door and introduced myself. After explaining what Operation Old Glory is, the customer was thankful and looking forward to receiving her new flag. As we took down her worn flag and folded it, she stood watching with tears falling down her face. After raising the new flag, we then presented her with her folded, retired flag. She shared with us that she lost her son in the service and this kind gesture meant the world to her. I will never let that memory go and how it made us all feel connected.
Finally, if someone in your area wants to contact you about replacing a flag, how can they reach out to Operation Old Glory in Florida?
Residents and business owners who have a flag that needs to be replaced can send an email to CENFLR-Vet_Net@comcast.com. You don’t have to be an Xfinity or Comcast Business customer to request a flag replacement.
