Volunteers Bring New Life to Old Glory Across Florida

Where some see a tattered Star-Spangled Banner, others see a chance to pay tribute to their country.
That patriotic spirit powers Operation Old Glory, a unique initiative led by military-connected employees at Comcast. Through the program, dedicated teammates work together to replace worn or damaged American flags outside homes and businesses at no cost to the property owners, whether they’re a customer or not. Since 2017, these volunteers known as Flag Ambassadors have replaced thousands of worn or damaged flags in communities across the country, free of charge. This weekend, volunteers replaced 72 flags across the Sunshine State.
The amazing accomplishment is a testament to the volunteers’ commitment to honor and preserve people’s connections to our nation’s greatest symbol, the American Flag. It’s also extra special since the volunteer event unfolded on Flag Day, June 14.

Kym Mazzullo, a Panama City resident, was excited to hear about Operation Old Glory from the Comcast representative at her office, Susan Hamuicka. Mazzullo is an Army veteran and has deep family ties to the military with her father, brother and son all serving.
“I thought it was great that Comcast does something like this. I really needed a new flag, so it was very helpful,” Mazzullo said. “I had been postponing going to the store to get a new one, but mine was torn and I had to take it down. I’m so glad to have a new flag flying on Flag Day!”
Volunteers gathered in cities big and small. From Fort Myers to Miami Gardens to Jacksonville and Panama City, their efforts led them to neighbor’s front yards — fueled by a love for their country. They took down the worn Stars and Stripes and replaced them with fresh flags.
In the City of Wellington, Comcast also recently gifted 100 new flags for the municipality’s Flags of Wellington display, set up on Memorial Day. Take a closer look here. 👇
On social media, the city recognized the touching ceremony and thanked partners for taking part.
A big thank you as well to the Rotary Club of Wellington for making this meaningful project possible. And to Comcast, for sponsoring the exhibit, and helping set up the exhibit along with Eagle Scouts Troop 777.

At the heart of Operation Old Glory in Florida is Candice Mahoney, Co-Lead of company’s employee resource group, Veterans Network. Mahoney is a former military spouse and proud Navy mom. She said every flag replacement is a small tribute to her own family’s legacy of service. Mahoney said her efforts strengthen community partnerships and inspire other colleagues.

“We’re not just replacing fabric. We’re renewing our promise to honor those who serve,” said Mahoney.
Comcast encourages employees to take action when they see a flag in need of replacement. Flag Ambassadors reach out to property owners and offer to replace the flag at no cost, turning a simple act into a powerful gesture of respect and remembrance. If you know of a flag that needs to be replaced, or would like to learn more about Operation Old Glory, please email CENFLR-Vet_Net@comcast.com.
