Cybersecurity Experts Share Key Strategies to Safeguard Business Data at Miami Event

Cybersecurity Panel

To close out Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Comcast Business and the South Florida Business Journal joined forces to gather cybersecurity experts from across the state for a live panel discussion. The panel, titled “Smart Security: Protecting your business from cyber attacks,” highlighted the need for protecting company and customer data, no matter the size of the organization.

Moderated by Ali Segovia, Senior Security Consultant at Microsoft, the panel included:

  • Mauricio Angée, Enterprise Chief Information Security Officer, University of Miami
  • Jayson Dunn, Executive Government Advisor, Amazon Web Services
  • Matt Greggains, Senior Security Solutions Architect, Comcast Business Global
  • Juan Hernandez, Senior Vice President and Commercial Insurance Leader, NSI Insurance Group
  • Lars M. Schmekel, Chief Information Security Officer, Miami-Dade County

These industry leaders shared updated security best practices, success stories and useful tips. Across the board, a strong theme emerged: awareness is key, and that starts with the people in your organization.

“Having your people aware of safe cybersecurity practices is critical for prevention and response. They are also your biggest risk, which is why you also need protection services in place,” said Greggains with Comcast Business Global. “It always comes back to people, processes and technology working together when it comes to keeping your business safe.”

Another important piece of advice: don’t have the mindset that a cyber attack will never happen to you. It is better to be prepared than pay the price of a breach.

“New business owners need to be aware of just what a cyber attack could cost them,” said Angée with the University of Miami. “I always tell people that if they are concerned about the cost of protection, they should know that it is much cheaper than the result of a breach.”

Today’s cyber threats can be relentless. With more and more data being collected and new technologies being used, businesses need tools that help them monitor, detect and respond around the clock.
